E-DEMOCRACY

8 MARCH 2008

Currently we hear a lot in the news about the voting machines and how they might be used in a fraudulent manner or be hacked by a specific political party in order to achieve victory in elections. How much of this is true and how much is merely a scare tactic.

After all people fear change and going to electronic voting machines is a change and it is coming whether we like it or not, because it makes sense and the voting exercise costs millions of dollars and is never perfect. Electronic voting can solve all these problems or as we are told could create many more.

And what about the future of the democracy and the future of online voting perhaps on your cell phone, your iPod or perhaps your home computer or laptop? We all know that day is coming as well and it could be right around the corner.

Can you just imagine Instant poling for the government, not thru third parties or media. The election results would be instantaneous and you could hold more elections many times per year so people can vote on different kinds of initiatives or on the direction of their government.

This could usher in a whole new age of eDemocracy or it might destroy our republic, as people instantly vote for instant gratification. Hopefully this article is of interest and that is has propelled thought. The goal is simple; to help you in your quest for the best in 2008.

The Infrared Sauna Heater A Hot Way To Health

The infrared heater is an ideal source of warm, penetrating, therapeutic heat. The cost of electricity to operate an infrared heater is extremely low. The infrared heater is designed to provide a clean and efficient heat source. The infrared heater is suggested for use in home saunas to ease many types of illnesses and medical conditions.

The infrared heater is good at heating objects rather than the air. The beauty of this infrared heater is that it heats you directly without using energy heating your surroundings. Although that does not mean that your surroundings do not get warm, however it does not get anywhere as hot as a traditional sauna

The cost of electricity to operate an infrared heater is very low. It also has a low installation cost. This is due to the fact that it is a vent free unit it requires no chimney or venting. The heater uses low amounts of energy and has the ability to heat quickly, at a very low cost.

The beauty with the infrared sauna heater is that it does not require constant maintenance. The heater itself heats very quickly, unlike sauna stones you do not have to keep throwing water on it which can save you having to sit there and worry about weather it is hot enough or not. Using the infrared heater you just sit back and relax.

The far infrared heat is very helpful for healing the skin, blood circulation, and skin cell revitalizing. Infrared heat is not intended to cure ailments but is used to bring relief to symptoms. Did you know that Far infrared heat and Far-infrared therapy is FDA approved? This type of therapy is approved for pain relief., this can include ease of joint stiffness, detoxification along with increasing blood circulation. The beauty of far-infrared heat is that it is safe, efficient and low-tech.

Business Golf

Business encourages golf as a natural side for networking and to develop relationships. Corporates spend billions of dollars and thousands of hours on business golf as it's no.1 pastime today. Many big business deals done at the golfing range and it is not going to change anytime soon. It's a sport that's enjoyed all over the world and it's definitely not a cheap sport to get into. You got your clubs and your entry fee which could cost you the amount of a new car depending on where you play. It's not a sport for the poor and that is probably the appeal for business men or women because one must be serious about the game if they want to get anywhere.

Be on your best behavior when playing with a client. Business golf can be a very lucrative initiative for companies today, but it can also wreck a big deal if not handled properly. Your attitude on the golf course and your reaction to how you are playing may cause a client to lose respect for you, and that may keep you from closing a deal. Don’t force the business discussion. You don’t want to start talking shop before you tee off the first hole. Take some time to get to know your client, enjoy being on the golf course and discuss topics aside from business. There is a general rule that it is safe to talk about business between the fifth and 15th holes.

The most important thing to realize is that people will remember how enjoyable it was to play golf with you; no one will remember what score you shot.

Sahaja Joga : Self Realisation Meditation

Sahaja Yoga is a unique method of meditation based on an experience called Self-Realisation (Kundalini Awakening) that can occur within each human being.

Through this process an inner transformation takes place by which one becomes moral, united, integrated and balanced.

One can actually feel the all pervading divine power as a cool breeze, as described in alsl religions and spiritual traditions of the world.

This is the actualisation of such transformation, which is taking place now, worldwide, and has been proved and experienced by hunderds of thousands in over 100 countries.

It is taught around the world entirely free of charge, as one cannot pay for the experience of the Divine Love.

Experience Your Self Realisation Now

You can receive your self realisation by sitting in front of the computer. All you need is pure desire to feel it.

Sit with your back straight but comfortably. Taking your shoes off might also help since Mother Earth sucks all negativity through our feet. Place both your hands with palms upwards on your lap. Look straight and relax.

Say in your heart, with all your pure desire,
"Mother, please give me my Self-Realisation".
Say this three times.

After awhile you will start to feel a gentle cool breeze on your hands and emanating from the top of your head. You will feel relaxed and your thoughts will gradually disappear. This is the first stage of meditation - thoughtless awareness - where you are fully alert but without any thoughts, in a state of pure and peaceful consciousness.

This sensation of breeze in your palms and above your head might be warm in the beginning (which is a sign that your Kundalini energy is purifying your chakras) but it will eventually cool down. You can verify it by placing your left palm 6 - 12 inches above your head, then trying with the right palm.

If you are unable to feel it at first, you can massage the top of your head (fontanelle bone area) in a circular clockwise motion, by pressing hard with the centre of your right palm, having your fingers fully stretched. Then again watch Shri Mataji's picture without thinking for a while, in a relaxed way.

This is the beginning of a fantastic journey into your own spiritual existence. It is a door opened to a new dimension of your awareness, which you can open and explore. If sustained through regular meditation, you will be able to feel your sybtle centers (chakras) as well as the chakras of others on your fingertips, and correct them using your spiritual energy (Kundalini).

Webcash Electronic Payment Services: Money Still Exchanges Hands, Just Without Ever Touching a Palm

Buying and selling products or services online just got a whole lot easier. Using Webcash, you can pay for purchases and receive money owed to you without ever touching an actual green dollar bill. Of course, not touching it might take some of the fun out of getting paid, but it's still your money just the same. It's virtual money.

So, you're saying to yourself right about now, "How is this Webcash feat performed?" A variety of online payment services have sprung up to make virtual payment a reality (no pun intended).

If you need to pay someone or someone needs to pay you all you need to know is their Webcash ID. If someone want to send you money through Webcash but you're not currently a member, no problem. You simply register (which is always free) and use it to start your own online shopping spree.

As you can see, buying and selling online no longer requires you to have a merchant account, which levels the playing field for home based businesses to accept online payments. Many electronic shopping carts are starting to implement Webcash as a payment option when checking out of online stores.

Now there's no excuse for not paying your debts on time. You may not be able to touch it, but believe me, "virtual money" is just as good as the real thing. Being paid electronically might not feel the same as someone placing "cold hard cash" in the palm of your hand, but it's still there: you just won't have to wash your hands as often.

New Or Used Sports Equipment?

Everyone has a sport. Some people are into team sports, others are into individual sports. Each sport has its own rules and regulations, and each sport requires its own set of equipment. Whether it is football, basketball, tennis, or golf, you'll be required to invest in equipment that is particular to the sport. This sports equipment might be balls, racquets, bats, clubs, or specific clothing, but also includes safety items and peripheral items, such as clothes and hats.

New or used sports equipment?

Before purchasing your sports equipment it is a good idea to consider a few questions.

1. How long have you been playing the sport?
2. How long do you plan on playing the sport?
3. What level (amateur or professional) do you seek to achieve?

Answering these questions honesty, will help you make the right decision about purchasing sports equipment. If you are starting out in a sport and the equipment is expensive then it could be a good idea to consider purchasing used equipment: it is a cheaper investment. If you aren't sure whether the sport will suit you, then choose to purchase used equipment first. If you wish to stay at amateur level, playing the sport purely as a hobby, then you may never need to buy new equipment at all.

On the other hand if you've made a complete commitment to the sport of your choice, or if you are now getting more serious, shopping for new and state-of-the-art equipment can add a new dimension to your playing game.

Buying new and used sports equipment online

Whatever the case, a good place to find and purchase new and used equipment is online. The Internet is full of stores that stock sporting goods and equipment for all levels and all budgets.

There are two excellent ways to find new and used equipment online. Try search within local community forum or local trading site. On these sites you simply search for the item you want and the search will yield results bringing you into contact with individuals and companies that sell the type of sporting equipment that you seek.

Take Care of Your Inner Beauty

Let us talk about beauty from a different angle!

We have our own criteria for judging the beauty of a woman. We look the beauty of a lady from a certain angle and then pass the remarks whether she is beautiful or not. It’s not fair. Let me tell every woman that she is unique and beautiful.

The business of beauty is thriving everywhere. Women are spending much of their time and money on buying beauty products. Even in the third world countries, women living below the poverty line, buy cheap and substandard beauty products, which give more harm to their skin than good.

It’s the fundamental right of every woman to look beautiful. Every woman wants to listen the sweet words “you are beautiful”. But the beauty of a woman is far from her looks or figure. Physical beauty is only one aspect while a beautiful charming personality is a complete blend of many fine characteristics such as good manners, etiquette, behavior, smile, intelligence, sense of humor, social and family values etc., all make a woman look beautiful and attractive.

Didn’t you know that there is a marked difference between a carefully hand woven expensive Persian carpet and a cheap machine made carpet. Both of these cannot be equated. A beautiful woman is like an elegant hand-knotted Persian carpet. Each and every silky, colorful thread of her character, nicely woven into her personality, gives a woman an everlasting beauty and attraction.

Looks are very important indeed but the characteristics of a person are much more important. Besides taking care of your physical beauty, why not think of improving your inner beauty. The beauty which everyone admires is becoming a rare commodity these days. While on your way to a beauty parlor keep on thinking ways of improving your inner beauty.

Take care of yourself and take care of your inner beauty. No doubt you are a beautiful person.

Badminton: Joo Bong tells Malaysian pair to drop fancy stuff

KOO Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong may be the world's top ranked men's doubles but South Korean badminton legend Park Joo Bong believes the Malaysian pair will struggle to win when it matters - like in the Olympics - if they continue to be overly flamboyant on court.
"Kien Keat-Boon Heong tend to turn the heat on themselves by being too fancy in their matches," said Joo Bong at the Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil yesterday.

"Being a show-off on court is no longer the way to win matches. Nowadays, it's all about applying the right strategies and tactics."

"They need to concentrate on improving on these aspects or face the possibility of a big disappointment at the Beijing Olympic Games in August.

"Winning the world title or the Olympic gold is what matters now. It's no longer a big thing to win 'Open' titles."
Joo Bong, who is regarded as the best doubles player ever, says his most cherished moment on court was winning the men's doubles gold medal with Kim Moon Soo in the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games.

Joo Bong, currently the head coach of the Japanese team, added that Kien Keat-Boon Heong tend to be complacent when playing weaker opponents.

"I have seen them struggle against unknown pairs. My advice to them is to show respect to their opponents, regardless of their world rankings."

Ironically, the Malaysian pair's two most famous defeats to lower ranked pairs last year were against Japanese.

Kien Keat-Boon Heong crashed in the second round of the French Open to Tadashi Ohtsuka-Keita Masuda and were then beaten in the quarter-finals of the Kuala Lumpur World Championships to Shuichi Sakamoto-Shintaro Ikeda.

However, Joo Bong, tipped Kien Keat-Boon Heong as one of three pairs who could win the men's doubles title in the Olympics.

"I am basing this on last year's performances. If Kien Keat-Boon Heong can buck up before the Olympics, I believe they can win the gold medal," said Joo Bong, who named reigning world champions Markis Kido-Hendra Setiawan of Indonesia and World No 3 Fu Haifeng-Cai Yun of China as the other two pairs.

- PETER Gade Christensen of Denmark will not be defend his Malaysia Open title after having withdrawn from tournament which begins at the Putra Stadium tomorrow, due to personal reasons.

Christensen, the fourth seed, didn't travel with the Danish team and his coach Thomas Stuer Lauridsen said a close relative of Christensen is gravely ill and they player opted not to travel.

Virtual payment system, anyone?

WEBCASH, a membership-free prepaid virtual payment system, was recently launched by WebOnline Dot Com Sdn Bhd. It allows subscribers to conduct online transactions offered by any participating e-commerce Web portal.

Webcash is an easy-to-use service and employs a prepaid method with the ability to top up via the Internet, card, voice call, and short message service/multimedia messaging service.

WebOnline is targeting 10 per cent of the registered 3.5 million local Internet service protocol users. According to WebOnline Dot Com's chairman Datuk Bhuhpat Rai M. Premji, the public can register their Webcash account online for free. Merchants will bear the transaction costs.

Bhupat adds that with Webcash, parents can let their children purchase things online within the credit allocated in their account. They can monitor their children's transaction with the transaction history. Values as low as RM10 can be loaded into a Webcash account, and amounts can also be transferred among account holders.

WebOnline has also incorporated voice over Internet protocol (PC-to-PC and PC-to-phone) capability for Webcash account holders called Space Webcash. They just need to download and install the software into their PC.

Calls to other Webcash members are free while calls to cell phones and landlines are charged at a discounted rate.

WebOnline Dot Com's chief executive officer Manirajah Kulanthavelu says that Webcash services utilises 128 bits Secure Socket Layer and a soft token system which requires a user to enter the password and a randomly generated pictured-text.

In the event a user's account has been hacked into, the user needs to open a complaint ticket online and stop the usage if an error or fraud has been detected. An immediate new account will be issued with the balance remaining intact.

Webonline : A boost to digital lifestyle

by Siti Nurbaiyah Nadzmi

MSC MALAYSIA (MSC), Multimedia Development Corporation (MDec) and British Telecom Multimedia Malaysia (BTMM) showcased five prototypes of broadband-based applications to prospective small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) at Menara MSC Cyberport in Johor Baru recently.

Positioned as digital age lifestyle oriented products and services, these prototypes are offered to SMEs to develop into consumer and industrial end products.

BT Group head of Digital Home Research Programme Graham Seabrook said the five prototypes were researched in the UK and ready to be developed by Malaysian SMEs at no cost.

"We are offering this to Malaysian companies that have the resources and capabilities to develop these prototypes into commercial products," he said.

Seabrook said every prototype had potential to enhance the digital lifestyle from creating digital music jukeboxes at nightspots, uploading images from phones to digital frames at home to connectivity of electrical home appliances all via broadband.

The prototypes are Community Calendar (a calendar that allows the community to organise events), MyFrame (digital photo frame that provides information from traffic feeds to global positioning system), Zeta (interactive digital jukebox with short messaging system), Video Show 2.0 (upload, organise and show video content) and Smart Home (organise the entire household digital electrical appliances).

The programme, MSC Malaysia - BTMM Digital Lifestyle, was launched in July and since its introduction, the programme has inducted five SMEs - Kadena Media Sdn Bhd and Webonline Dot Com Sdn Bhd from Kuala Lumpur, Coraza Technologies Sdn Bhd, CEEDTeC Sdn Bhd and Increseo Media Sdn Bhd from Penang.

BTMM chief operating officer Dr Kamal Jit Singh said the programme was aimed to fast-track product development by Malaysian SMEs using the research undertaken by BT in United Kingdom.

"On the average, BT produces about three prototypes in a quarter, predicting trends and usage of the future."

Why we want you to be rich Two Men • One Message

With this new book, the age-old saying of: "Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach him to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime," is explored as Trump and Kiyosaki teach you what they believe you need to know to be rich.

They each could have written a book on the subject, but they chose instead to write a book together because of their shared passion for education and their desire to bring emphasis to the importance of strong financial skills and understanding.

Money alone won't solve the problems we face. In referencing the need to "teach people to fish" and preparing them to create solutions to the challenges we face as a nation, versus simply giving people fish and keeping them dependant upon others for their sustenance – Donald and Robert focus on why and how people can take action in their lives and contribute to solutions as opposed to magnifying the problems.

The Gathering

Anne Enright cares about being right with words. To tell the story is not enough - it has to be well told. Not that you'll necessarily find her work eager to please - nothing so easy or fawning: it's more the end result of what I'd guess is an almost involuntary drive to do justice to both the work and the reader. Whatever she'd list as her motivations, Enright has thus far produced essays, short stories and three novels, all alive with that lovely thing - a fully realised voice: muscular, agile, sometimes witty, sometimes hallucinogenic, often dark and lyrical in a quiet and horribly skilful way.

The Gathering, her fourth novel, is ostensibly a simple thing. The plot, shaped around a protagonist who undergoes a shock, is knocked back physically and psychologically into past times and past places. Then comes the conclusion, where present and future are reformed in the light of histories that are suddenly newly perceived. Here Veronica Hegarty loses her already lost, lovely alcoholic brother Liam. His funeral sinks her back into the gathered ranks of her rambling Irish family - the dysfunctional, drinking, blue-eyed Hegartys. Meanwhile, Liam's ghost hounds her out through memories and fantasies: her apparently tidy existence, her husband and children seeming more distant with each thought.

And, of course, The Gathering isn't a simple thing at all - it's a genuine attempt to stare down both

love and death, to anatomise their pains and fears and peculiar pleasures. At which point I ought to talk about the sheer physicality of Enright's writing. The one word roar recurs though the text, as if to remind us of the din within each of her characters: strangers meet in a hotel and share the presence of potential nakedness without a touch; Liam's thirst for alcohol rages while Veronica's pads along behind her through insomniac nights; a moustache can barely be noticed before its description moves on to the idea of tickled thighs. Sex - for Enright, as for John Banville - is a kind of gleefully appalling slapstick that dogs humanity and leaves it betrayed. This is a world where fidelity is impossible and sex is absurd, but love is forever, like a scar. And it isn't only sex that works on the body - death is both a comfort and a rapist. The fear and bewilderment it brings the living echo through flesh, and Enright is unflinching as she documents all the physical symptoms of emotion and memory. Bones and words always lurk under the skin, equally stark and disturbing.

All of which might become overwhelming were it not for the lightness and beauty of the prose. Veronica reminds us that she is named for the saint who wiped Christ's face on his way to the cross, producing his image "on her tea towel", a nun tells her - this was "the first ever photograph". Veronica mentions, characteristically deadpan, that she still thinks of the saint whenever she's given a moist towel after a Chinese meal. It's a joy to be with a book that combines the exalted and the profane so handily, that crafts compulsive disclosure until it can dart from tenderness to anger, to dry humour, to the anguish that drums through the narrative. Like many good protagonists, Veronica notices things, maybe notices too much: makes pictures helplessly as she stops sleeping with her husband, fails to love her daughters and her mother as she should, resents her family and grieves for her unforgivable brother.

Although Liam appears relatively seldom, his portrayal is pitch-perfect. The beautiful boy who destroys himself, the huge eyes begging impossible love, the hearts of his women rifled and then broken before the final act of liquid self-destruction, a march into the sea, pockets full of stones. He becomes the ultimate definition of love's stupidity - an outpouring of energy towards people who are always destined to disappoint, to be disappointed and, above all, who are compelled to leave us in the most devastating way, by dying. The horror and wonder of love, we are shown, is that it outlives its object. Enright's deft handling of time slowly layers up possibilities and errors for her characters, time spent and time ahead cocooning them. The effect gives the narrative a satisfying depth - the author's continued revelations of mortality, even pointlessness, are cold, if not cruel, and yet the telling out of individual lives, the unblinking attention, is rooted in compassion.

For some, this kind of narrative will always be uncomfortable - too many feelings and not enough action. The little world of lit crit can seem a
bloodless place, populated by those whose stomachs never lurch when they're nervous, whose pupils never dilate when they see someone they love, whose hearts beat with utter regularity, far from the ignorant and animal.

Yet Enright's work is neither mindless nor inhuman; it is clearly the product of a remarkable intelligence, combined with a gift for observation and deduction. She has uncovered the truth that sometimes our great adventures are interior. When someone we love dies, leaves, the action is elsewhere. That battle with cancer, that dramatic crash, that bolt from the blue - it's all scripted for someone else. And yet still we insist on being changed, moved, reshaped. It is our nature, the nature Enright charts. Because narratives run on all kinds of levels. To misunderstand this is to reduce our stories to a kind of dull pornography - actions performed without emotion, without depth, by people we will never know and for whom we feel nothing. For Enright, the body, the mind, the will, the world, the heart - all work upon each other in a terrible, wonderful roar of life.

Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman

The surrealist stunners in Haruki Murakami's new story collection take you to the creepy, sublime places that no author does better.
By Laura Miller

Sept. 14, 2006 | Haruki Murakami's short stories are a hit and miss proposition. In this aspect, they're not unlike his novels, in which mysterious and evocative developments swell and shrink, drifting through the narrative like strange, pulsing sea creatures whose course eventually gets lost in the dim distance. Murakami's fiction is full of perplexed women, aimless men, subterranean corridors, objects with minds of their own, wayward cats and old men with very odd stories to tell. Not all of these elements find resolution, but in the context of the author's longer narratives, the occasional lack of closure and explanation isn't a problem; the whole thing somehow feels satisfying -- and how Murakami pulls that off (I couldn't hope to explain it) is the secret to what makes him a great novelist.

His short stories, however, don't always achieve this satisfaction. In his new collection, "Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman," there are indeed some genuine stunners, stories that distill the Murakami essence, that addictive combination of the banal and the archetypal. Take "Where I'm Likely to Find It," which is narrated by a private detective who only works on a particular kind of case and refuses to accept any payment for his services. His most recent client is a woman whose husband inexplicably disappeared somewhere on the stairway between the 24th and the

26th floors of their high-rise condominium apartment building. The man is unlikely to have run out on his wife; he didn't have his money and credit cards and had just asked her to whiphim up a batch of pancakes. So the detective takes to hanging out on the stairway, chatting with the handful of residents who use it instead of the elevator. He meets a philosophical old man who tells him, "sometimes we don't need words. Rather, it's words that need us. If we were no longer here, words would lose their whole function. ... They would end up as words that are never spoken, and words that are never spoken are no longer words."

In a way, Murakami is just like this detective. He likes to linger in the dullest of functional, in-between places, like stairwells and bus stops, waiting for a door to show up. In his fiction, these spots are transformed, made uncanny -- or maybe it's just that their underlying uncanniness is revealed.

Atmosphere is so important to Murakami's work that he's at an inherent disadvantage writing short stories, where there isn't much time to conjure it. Some of the pieces in "Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman" feel too formless or, conversely, a little pat, like a ghost story in which a night watchman doing the rounds confronts a reflection of himself whose expression conveys an implacable hatred; needless to say, the next morning he discovers that there is no mirror on that wall.

What rarely fails this writer, though, is his knack for images. Sometimes delivering one of these is all the story really needs to do. It might be a little boy, suspended between life and death for a few moments in the hovering wall of an enormous wave. Or, more humbly, a smooth, kidney-shaped stone that is in a different spot in a doctor's office every morning despite the fact that no human hand could have moved it. Or it might be the unearthly music a man vacationing on a Greek island hears on the moonlit night when his lover vanishes impossibly and forever.

About half of the stories here have enough of Murakami's signature strengths to make them unmissable -- the rest will appeal mostly to completists. Unlike his masterly 2002 collection, "After the Quake" (which the author likens to a "concept album" in his introduction to this book), "Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman" is miscellaneous, a roundup of early and late works. Some of them have been substantially revised since their first publication, a reflection on the provisional nature of Japanese publishing; Murakami's novels are also often significantly revised or cut -- by the author himself, I might add -- in later editions and translations. Chances are the versions of the tales you'll find in "Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman" are better than those you may have read elsewhere.

As a writer, Murakami seems to take his cue more from the jazz musicians who played in the nightclub he once managed than from some of the pristine, controlled American writers he has translated -- Raymond Carver, for example. Murakami's fiction is improvisational, welling up from his unconscious, and he has told interviewers that he never knows where it's going when he starts. As a result, unless he's got plenty of room to chase impulses and circle back from sidetracks, it doesn't always arrive where it needs to. Still, no one else can take us to the wondrous, creepy, sublime places that Murakami can when he's in top form, and that's why it's always worth coming along for the ride.

Holiday Gift Giving on a Budget

Trying to find the perfect gift for everyone on your holiday list can be time-consuming, frustrating, and expensive. Many people find that this experience causes them to overspend their holiday budget - assuming they were prudent enough to set a budget limit in the first place. Unfortunately for some, the only budget limit they set is the limit on their credit cards and the holiday shopping only ends when this limit is reached. The holidays don’t have to be a time to go into debt. With a little bit of planning, you can take advantage of some easy, low-cost ways to spread the holiday cheer this season.

Use Your Special Talents

Take an inventory of your basic talents and skills to see which ones you could put to use to create holiday gifts. Most people would appreciate a gift that someone put time and effort into and personally make for them as opposed to something purchased at the mall. With an investment of just a few dollars for ingredients or materials and some basic skills you could:

  • Use your cooking skills to bake some holiday themed cookies.
  • Use your knitting talent to create a scarf, mittens, or a hat.
  • Use your scrap booking skills to make an album of special photos.
  • Use your craft talents to make a holiday wreath.
  • Use your handyman skills to complete household repairs for someone.

The possibilities for low-budget gift giving are endless if you have a hobby or basic skill that you are willing to share with others.

Not so Talented?

If you are still searching for your special talents, don’t despair, there are plenty of thoughtful low-cost ways to create meaningful holiday gifts. You can find lots of ideas by visiting Internet sites like: www.ivillage.com, www.familyfun.com, or www.diynetwork.com. Some simple ideas that don’t require a lot of talent and allow you to stretch individual packages of items amongst several gift recipients would be:

  • Get some inexpensive decorative tins from a Dollar store or discount store and divide packages of store bought cookies to fill them.
  • Buy some mason jars with screw-on lids and fill them with ingredients to make a batch of tasty cookies. Print the recipe out on a gift tag or index card and tie on with a ribbon.
  • Wrap some chocolates in colored plastic wrap (usually available around the holidays) and tie with a festive ribbon and a candy cane.

Use your imagination and you can probably come up with a number of ideas that won’t cost a lot of money or take a lot of time especially if you assemble your gifts all at one time.

Give the Gift of Time – Your Time

Another easy way to manage your holiday budget is to give the gift of time. Offer to do a specific chore for someone, or better yet, make them a coupon or certificate you can present to them in place of a store-bought gift.

Some ideas could be:
  • Make a home-cooked meal
  • Do a week’s worth of laundry
  • Clean their house
  • Wash their car
  • Do an afternoon of yard work
  • Baby-sit their kids

You can tailor the offer to the gift recipients needs and if you know them well, you should have a pretty good idea of what offer would be most appreciated. Have fun with it!

Come to a Family Consensus

In addition to utilizing some of these inexpensive gift ideas, you can also consider discussing cost-saving strategies with family members such as:

  • Setting a spending limit on individual gifts.
  • Doing a gift exchange, where you each draw a name out of a hat, instead of exchanging individual gifts with each family member.
  • Going in together on a family gift, like a season pass to a pool, amusement park, zoo, or state park.

By getting the whole family to agree on some gift-giving guidelines, everyone can save money, and no one will be disappointed because they had other expectations.

Don’t Forget the Less Fortunate

The holidays are also a good time of year to evaluate and rid yourself of things you no longer need but could be useful to others. If you donate them to a non-profit charity like Goodwill or the Salvation Army, it’s also a good idea to get a receipt, because you can deduct the value of the donation when you do your taxes. You’ll probably not only feel good about de-cluttering your home, but you just might brighten someone else’s holiday. So take some time to:

  • Go through your closets, and drawers to look for clothes you no longer wear.
  • Get your kids involved and find toys they’re no longer interested in.
  • Clean out your basement, garage, and storage areas.

While you are going through this process, you may even find some valuable items you are no longer using that you could sell on EBay or through your community newspaper, like the Penny Saver or Thrifty Nickel, to make some extra money to use for the holidays.
The holidays should be an occasion to celebrate and enjoy time with family friends. Don’t let a tight budget turn it into a stressful occasion instead. Take some time this year to plan your gift giving to keep it within your budget. With a little bit of time, effort, and creativity you can spread a little holiday cheer without spending a lot!

Ayurveda considers toxins as one of the prime causes that lead to chronic diseases. Opting for a detox regime would help in releasing toxins from the system. A few ways by which one could clean and replenish the body system within a few months is mentioned here. However, pregnant or nursing women are advised to keep away from following such routines.

Liver is the only organ in the body that helps the body to remain free of toxins and helps in detoxification. Heavy metals such as aluminium, nickel, arsenic, lead and mercury, which enter human body through pollution, food products and medicines, are deposited in the liver, which slow down the ability of liver, thereby reducing the detoxification process.

The Many Benefits Of Greek Hay (FENUGREEK)

The word ‘Fenugreek’ is derived from the Greek word ‘Foenum-Graecum’ which means ‘GreeK Hay’. Although, a native of East Mediterranean and West Africa, Fenugreek is cultivated since the Bronze age and is greatly valued in ancient Egypt, and was even considered as a herb that induces childbirth during the 1500BC.
Fenugreek is a pungent, warming herb, well-known for its benefit of increasing lactation when consumed by lactating mothers, while also soothing the irritated tissues. The other benefits of the herb, as a blood sugar lowering agent and diabetes controller, and its heart-friendly properties are indeed well-known.
A recent study, published in the Asia Pacific Journal of Clinical Nutrition during the year 2007, indicated that Fenugreek also lowers cholesterol levels in an effective manner.

A study was conducted at the Jaipur Diabetes and Research Center in India, on 25 newly diagnosed patients with type 2 Diabetes, who were randomly divided into two groups. The Group 1 received one gram of Fenugreek seed extract, while the Group 2 received the usual exercise, diet-control, and placebo capsules for two months. At the end of two months, there was significant increase in HDL (Good cholesterol) levels, with decrease in triglyceride levels in the Group 1 category. Also, the Group 1 showed better insulin resistance and blood sugar control, than those in Group 2.

Yet another study which was published in the ‘Food and Chemical Toxicology Journal’ 2006, reveals that Fenugreek could even be used as a complimentary therapy in treating Cancer patients who undergo Chemotherapy. It is said that an alkaloid of the herb ‘trigonelline’ has the potential to treat cervical and liver cancers.

Both seeds and leaves of Fenugreek are used for medicinal purposes. Ayurveda considers it to be a useful rejuvenating herb. The Fenugreek seeds are used to alleviate bronchial and digestive problems, inflammation, debility, allergies and gout.

Turn To Ginger For A Healthy Heart !

Although the heart-healthy and cholesterol benefits of garlic have been long-known, it has now been revealed that ginger could prove as good.

A major cause of Atherosclerosis, a major cause of coronary heart disease, happens when the fatty cells and bad cholesterol stick to the artery walls, leading to inflammation, preventing blood circulation. Ginger reduces the stickiness of blood platelets, while also promoting circulation.

Dr. Isaac Mathai, Medical Director, Soukya International Holistic Health Center, say that ginger has the property of reducing cholesterol absorption in Liver and blood, thereby reducing cholesterol levels.

To add to this, research has proved that herbs like ginger are much safer and better than non-steroidal-anti-inflammatory drugs. The February

2006 edition of ‘Alternative and Complementary Therapies’ reveal that herbal anti-inflammatory work on multiple-target mechanisms in the body, making it less potent than pharmaceuticals. In the process, the side-effects linked to drugs are also limited.

Eating small quantities of ginger a day, say as much as 50gms, would be sufficient, say experts. However, to achieve maximum benefits, add a little water, mash it with a metal object in a steel or brass cup. Drop the mashed pulp into boiling water and use the decoration for tea or in curries while cooking.

Beauty Shortcuts

Being a woman means having a little vanity -- or a lot. We've got some quick beauty shortcuts to make you life easier when you're in a hurry with no time to spare. These tips will help you save money while cutting your beauty routine in half.

Skin & Make-Up

  • Add a little moisturizer to your foundation to and it will glide on smoothly.
  • Skip eye shadow and use an eyeliner pencil underneath your eyes, followed by mascara.
  • Don't use lip liner, instead choose a matte lipstick for staying power. Max Factor's "Lipfinity" requires just one application for hours of wear.
  • Use a matching eyeliner pencil to touch up sparse areas in your eyebrows.
  • Don't have time for a tan? Invest in some bronzing powder for your face and shoulders.
  • Use disposable make-up remover cloths for removing eye shadow and mascara. Baby wipes serve the same purpose.
  • Have an electric razor on hand for quick shaves.
  • Use neutral shades and you don't have to worry about your cosmetics clashing with your clothing.
  • Periodically sharpen all of your make-up pencils so you're not fishing for the sharpener at the last minute.

Hair

  • Use an all-in-one shampoo and conditioner.
  • Since the tousled look is in style, run your fingers through your hair (without brushing or combing) and pull it back into a ponytail.
  • Run your blow dryer on high, but use a diffuser.
  • Scrunch your hair while blow-drying and skip the curling iron or hot rollers.
  • When your shampoo or conditioner gets low, add a little water to get the last drop.
  • Soak your hair in conditioner while bathing.
  • Sleep on a satin pillowcase to save your hairstyle.
  • Add a light dab of cornstarch or talcum powder to your hair to absorb any excess oil.
  • For a quick, tousled look the next day, wash hair the night before and put it up in a messy bun. In the morning, take it down and finger comb.
  • Choose pants and slacks with Velcro fasteners.
